4 films in 1 post

Recently, we have watched Sideways, Melinda and Melinda, The Stepford Wives and The Notebook. Although this post presents our opinions about these films, its main goal is just to register some information about them. If you intend to visit this blog regularly, you will see that we will do this frequently. The reason is very simple: sometimes we just forget important details about the films we see and we want to use the blog to help us remember.

Sideways (2004)

SidewaysDirector: Alexander Payne
Stars: Paul Giammati, Thomas Haden Church, Virginia Madsen and Sandra Oh

IMDB Link: http://imdb.com/title/tt0375063/

We really liked this film. We were really lucky, because we didn’t plan to watch it: we just sit on the sofa to watch some TV, and the film was starting. Initially we found it a bit strange, but the characters soon changed our minds. Miles character (performed by Paul Giammati) is absolutely brilliant! The other actors are quite well, but Paul Giammati was the one who made us “feel” the film. There’s one scene, when Miles drive Jack home (after the trip), where you can see how well can Giammati express the guilt that the character feels at that moment. His face makes us feel sorry for the character.

We consider it the kind of film that makes us think about ourselves and about our own life. We recommend it.

Melinda and Melinda (2004)

Melinda and MelindaDirector: Woody Allen
Stars: Radha Mitchell, Will Ferrell, Chloe Sevigny, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Amanda Peet

IMDB Link: http://imdb.com/title/tt0378947/

This interesting film presents two different stories — one comic, the other tragic — about Melinda trying to put her life together. If you don’t like Woody Allen, then it is highly probable that you won’t like this one. Also, we were a bit disappointed with Will Ferrell — usually, he’s a lot better.
Our opinion: if you have 100 minutes that you can spare, then you can watch the film; otherwise, just skip it.

The Stepford Wives (2004)

The Stepford WivesDirector: Frank Oz
Stars: Nicole Kidman, Matthew Broderick, Bette Midler, Glenn Close, Christopher Walken

IMDB Link: http://imdb.com/title/tt0327162/

This film was very disappointing. The plot is not good and the characters are boring. We usually like Nicole Kidman (and Matthew Broderick is ok), but this one is really dull. We don’t recommend it!

The Notebook (2004)

The NotebookDirector: Nick Cassavetes
Stars: Rachel McAdams, Ryan Gosling, Gena Rowlands, James Garner, Joan Allen

IMDB Link: http://imdb.com/title/tt0332280/

Our friend Paulo loves this film and recommended it to us. And we thank him! This was probably the best love story we have seen in the last 2 or 3 years (by the way, we also enjoyed “The Lake House” with Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock). If you’re in the mood for a romantic film, then this one is a really good choice. And if you are sensible, be prepared to cry.
